Nazarea, V.P., M.C. Piniero, and R.P. Mula.  2003. Urban Gardens: Persistence and Change.  Users’ Perspectives With Agricultural Research and Development (UPWARD), Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. 54 pp.

This publication is based on a research project which aimed to examine the socio-cultural and biophysical dimensions of urban homegardens in Baguio City, northern Philippines. The collection of papers in this publication highlight several key research and development issues of particular interest to the UPWARD Network, including:

1)

the multiple roles and functions of homegardens especially for households along the urban margins;

2)

how the urban environment helps shape and is shaped by local homegarden systems;

3)

the contribution of local knowledge to the management of homegardens under socio-economic and agroecological transitions;

4)

importance of exploring and valuing the users' perspectives, including a greater sensitivity to gender and household dynamics; and

5)

methodological challenges in approaching the study of urban homegardens from a socio-technical perspective, including the added value of employing ethnographic methods and tools.

The project, including this publication, was supported through a grant from the USAID-CGIAR Linkage Fund. Valuable assistance from the Benguet State University (BSU) and other agencies in Baguio City made the research undertaking possible.
